Uganda's greatest avian diversity circuit , from the legendary Shoebill at Mabamba through river safaris, remote arid valleys, and montane forests to Queen Elizabeth's waterbird spectacle
This is Uganda's definitive birding circuit , thirteen days through every major ecological zone from papyrus swamps to arid savanna to montane forest. We begin at Mabamba Bay where the legendary Shoebill stands motionless in papyrus before launching into heavy flight. Murchison Falls delivers Nile river safaris where boat-based work combines with raptor watching along Africa's greatest river. Kidepo Valley offers Uganda's remotest arid zone , open plains where Secretary Birds and Common Ostriches stride across golden grass. Mount Elgon captures montane forest specialists. Queen Elizabeth combines the Kazinga Channel (one of Uganda's greatest waterbird spectacles) with savanna diversity. Lake Mburo completes the arc with intimate woodland birding.
From canoe excursions to open vehicle game drives, from dawn forest walks to evening river observations, this circuit employs every birding technique. Thirteen days is the ideal duration for genuinely engaging with Uganda's avifaunal diversity rather than sampling superficially. By tour's end, you'll have encountered over 600 species across genuinely different ecosystems, with photographic opportunities and wildlife concentrations that few other African circuits match.
